European Super League: Another desperate money grab from Florentino Perez and Joan Laporta

Florentino Perez, president of Real Madrid, today announced plans for a new European Super League, with the support of Joan Laporta, president of Barcelona.

I would describe this fresh attempt at creating a European Super League as desperate, embarrassing and selfish, and most football fans seem to agree.

Here is a tweet explaining the format of the new proposed super league:

Whilst this is better than the original plans drawn up, it is still a shambolic idea and nothing more than a desperate money grab from the officials at Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Whilst they have listened to criticism and introduced promotion and relegation, there is still a severe lack of sporting merit involved in being a member of the top ‘star’ division.

For example, if a smaller club wins their domestic league, like Leicester did in 2015/16, then they would be entered into the third tier of the Super League, meaning they would still be a minimum of three years away from being amongst Europe’s elite in the star division.

I think a big reason for the 'Super League' is because European giants Real Madrid and Barcelona are concerned about the size and growth of the English Premier League and don’t want to be left behind.

It is a pathetic attempt from the Spanish clubs to look after their own futures at the expense of smaller sides around Europe.

Why should any other clubs in Europe have to suffer just because those two clubs have handled their finances so badly in recent years?

So far no clubs, other than Real Madrid and Barcelona, have shown support for the idea with a whole host of clubs doing the opposite and speaking against it, such as PSG, Manchester City, and Bayern Munich.

I am wholly against this new Super League but that doesn’t mean I support the way football is currently being run.

UEFA, FIFA, and other football governing bodies only want to protect their own backs, they don’t truly care about fans otherwise ticket or TV prices wouldn’t be skyrocketing.

The once working man’s sport is run by a greedy minority and this super league is just an attempt from an even greedier minority to take over.

When it comes to football fans deciding on who they want to be in control of their sport, it sadly comes down to choosing between the lesser of two evils.

The super league idea isn’t going to go away but I think that thanks to the protests from the fans in recent years, it is highly unlikely to ever come to fruition unless it is changed drastically.

I guess time will tell on what plans Florentino Perez has to gain more support for his idea.
